How to Calculate Mulch Volume by Area and Depth

To determine the amount of mulch needed, we’ll use a simple formula that takes the area (in square feet) and the desired mulch depth (in inches). The result will be the volume of mulch required in cubic feet.

Step 1: Calculate the Area of Your Garden

The area calculation will depend on the shape of the garden or landscape:

For Rectangular or Square Areas:

Multiply the length and width of the area to get the area in square feet.

For Circular Areas:

Use the radius of the circle to calculate the area with the following formula:

Step 2: Calculate the Mulch Volume Based on Depth

Once you have the area, you can determine how much mulch you’ll need by factoring in the desired depth. For most garden beds, a mulch depth of 2 to 3 inches is typical.

To convert the depth from inches to feet, divide by 12. Then multiply the area by this depth to get the volume in cubic feet.
